Earl H. Kinmonth
Earl H. Kinmonth is Professor Emeritus, Taisho University. Before moving
to Japan permanently in 1999, he taught at Cornell University, the University
of California-Davis, and the University of Sheffield. He has held adjunct
positions at SOAS in the UK and at various universities in Japan including
Keio and Waseda. His primary research interest is the development of the
modern middle classes in 19th and 20th century Japan, especially the role
of education in status acquisition and preservation. In addition, he is
working on a book tentatively titled "Japan in the Foreign Imagination,"
a study of the misreporting of Japan in English language news media. His
most recent research on education will appear as a chapter (Much ado about
very little: The [2015] Japanese government order that Japanese national
universities 'abolish' their humanities and social science programs) in
a book from Routledge entitled The Changing Face of Higher Education.
A Japanese citizen, he writes commentary on contemporary social, historical,
and educational issues in Japanese and English and translates Japanese
academic and journalistic texts into English.
